It is recommended you wash your silk scarf by hand in cool/lukewarm water. Use a detergent made for delicate items (many detergents that are safe for wool are also safe for cleaning silk scarves). Washing silk scarves in a washing machine can damage the silk fibres. Using hot water can cause the silk scarf to lose its colour.
Fill your sink or another bowl with lukewarm water and soak your silk scarf in it for around 5 minutes. Add the gentle detergent of your choice to the water and gently swish it around to distribute it evenly. Use your hands to gently squeeze the cleaning solution into the scarf. Avoid excessive rubbing because it can damage the silk fibres.
Rinse the scarf carefully in cool water. You can rinse your scarf under tap water. Again, avoid excessive rubbing, squeezing or wringing!
Remove excess water from your scarf by laying it flat between two absorbent white towels. Pat or gently roll the towels to remove as much moisture as possible. Do not wring or wrinkle the silk any more than necessary.
Air-dry your silk scarf by hanging it on a plastic hanger in a shaded area. Do not use wooden or metal hangers because they can stain or leave rust on the silk fabric. Do not use an automatic dryer as it will damage the fabric, even on the lowest heat setting. Do not hang your scarf to dry near any sources of heat or in the sun as it may cause fading.
If ironing is required, make sure your silk scarf is slightly damp when pressed. Use the lowest heat setting on the iron and use a piece of clean white cloth between the scarf and the iron – never put your iron directly onto the silk scarf.
